What is UNIX?

Solaris UNIX training UNIX was developed at Bell Labs in the late 1960's to be used by programmers, and is a multi-user, multitasking operating system. UNIX was one of the first operating systems written in a high-level programming language, (C) and was distributed in its source language form. This meant that anyone who had a copy could modify and customize it. By the end of the 1970s, dozens of different flavors of UNIX were running. UNIX is the most portable (works on different kinds of computers) operating system ever developed and can be run on any computer that has a C compiler. Most modern flavors of UNIX have graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that are user-friendly.

Due to its portability, flexibility, and power, UNIX has become the most popluar operating system for workstations and Internet servers. It IS the base software of the Internet. UNIX has been less popular in the personal computer (PC) market. The Open Group "officially" owns the trademark, "UNIX". UNIX operating systems are offered in products from Sun Microsystems, Silicon Graphics, IBM, and other companies.

A UNIX offshoot, Linux, is available in both "free-ware" and commercial versions and is increasing in popularity as an alternative to proprietary operating systems.
